mint2qif Convert converts data downloaded from Mint to standard QIF format.
Use mint2qif Convert to import your Mint transaction data into Quicken® software or other financial applications that accept QIF files containing multiple accounts.
NOTE that QIF files generated by mint2qif cannot be read by Quicken for Mac (which does not read QIF files at all) or by the Quicken for Windows Starter Edition. All other editions of Quicken for Windows will read these QIF files.
There is currently only one Setting for mint2qif. This is whether to import investment transactions from Mint. See below for additional information.
Either drag and drop your downloaded Mint csv file into the converter drop zone or select the Convert button to choose the Mint file to convert. This will bring up a standard file chooser to select the downloaded Mint file. Select Convert to qif to initiate the conversion. The converter will create a .qif in the same folder where you saved your Mint file. It will contain all the accounts, transactions, and categories from your Mint file.
See below for the correct procedure to read a QIF format file into Quicken.
Enter the license by copying the license string (CTRL-C) from the confirmation e-mail and pasting it (CTRL-V) into the converter license dialog. To enter the license string manually from within the program select the License button, and paste (or type) the full license code into the dialog.
On Microsoft Windows, you can copy the license file mint2qif.lic from the product confirmation e-mail to the same folder where you installed mint2qif Convert - i.e. C:\Program Files (x86)\MoneyThumb\mint2qif Convert.
After you enter your license, your license email will be shown in the program title bar, and in About.
Before actually running mint2qif Convert you need to download your Mint data from the Mint website.
On Windows or Mac OS X, double click the mint2qif Convert icon on your desktop.
You may also run mint2qif Convert from the Windows Start Menu, or run mint2qif.exe on Windows or mint2qif Convert.app on Mac OS X.
Clicking the Settings button brings up the dialog as shown.
There is currently only one Setting for mint2qif. This is whether to import investment transactions from Mint. Because Mint does not retain sufficient information about investment transactions (such as how many shares were bought or sold), the investment transactions will not be very useful in Quicken or other financial software. Mint2qif can create placeholder transactions that have the correct dollar amount but that is all. If you do have investment transactions we recommend not creating placeholder transactions which will need to be edited in Quicken, but rather to download investment transactions directly from your brokerage.
There are two ways to identify the Mint CSV file to convert:
or
The conversion will run and create a log with an entry for each transaction in each account, along with a summary of how many transactions were processed. Note that if you are running in trial mode, each transaction will be logged, but only the first 10 ten transactions in each account will be saved to the .qif file.
If you are importing investment accounts, first ensure that the Investing tab is visible in Quicken. Use View - Tabs to show and select Investing.
To read the .qif file into Quicken, open Quicken, select File, then from the pull-down menu select File Import, and then QIF File... This will bring up a dialog window.
In the box for Location of QIF file, browse to get the name of the file generated by mint2qif Convert. In the line for Quicken Account to import into, select the pull-down and select <All Accounts> or <All Account> (depending on your version of Quicken). Selecting an individual bank or credit card account will not work. With that selection, you can then ignore the warning about not being able to import checking, savings, or credit cards etc. The QIF Format files created by mint2qif Convert contain the account name in a format that Quicken will read. Select the check boxes for Transactions, Account List, Category List, Special handling for transfers, and if you have investments Security List.
After importing the .qif file, you will likely need to go to the account register for each of your accounts and accept the downloaded transactions into the account. In some releases of Quicken you will need to edit the Quicken Preferences for Downloaded Transactions to uncheck the option for Automatically add to banking registers in order for Quicken to show the downloaded transactions to accept.
mint2qif Convert will import categories from Mint. All the standard Mint categories which are in use will be created in Quicken, using Quickens category/subcategory convention. If you have a custom category in Mint - for example "Income - Spouse" Mint will only output the subcategory, i.e. Spouse. There mint2qif will create Spouse as a top level category in Quicken. Use the Category List in Quicken to edit the category and make it a subcategory of whatever top level category is appropriate.
Mint also creates many transactions with a category of "Transfer". Quicken considers "Transfer" to be a reserved name and will not import transactions with that category. If the transfer information is accurate in Mint (generally for inter account transfers such credit card payments it is) then mint2qif will create internal transfers for Quicken in such a way that Quicken will match them up. Otherwise mint2qif will create transactions with the category of "External Transfer".
The most common reason for this is that you need to accept the transactions into the Quicken account register. In Quicken, go to the account register, select the Downloaded Transactions tab at the bottom of the register, and accept the transactions.
If there are transactions showing in the account list, but not at the bottom of the account register, you may need to modify your Quicken preferences. Under the preferences for Downloaded transactions uncheck the top check-box on the right hand side for Automatically add to banking registers.
Also review the log in the mint2qif Convert log window, and make sure that the transactions were processed.
These errors will only occur if the downloaded file from Mint does not have the correct format. This could possibly happen if you edited the file with an external editor such as Excel or a text editor.
After mint2qif Convert has run, you may wish to save the log information to a file. Select the Save Log button. This will bring up a File Save dialog. Simply specify a file name and select Save.
To clear the log information select the Clear Log button.
